Fiaschetteria Toscana (tel 041 528 52 81, Calle Grisostomo 5719, open Wednesday to Sunday & lunch on Monday). There is nothing tuscan about a place that serves up solid Venetian food washed down with wines from an impressive list. The frittura della Serenissima, a mixed fried seafood platter, is memorable Osteria alla Frasca (tel 041 528 54 33, Corte della Carita 5176). The dishes on offer are fairly standard, favouring seafood, and a smidgen pricey for what you get. However, the setting, with tables flooding the charming campiello rarely touched by tourist caravans, is a must and if its good enough for the locals.... Osteria al Bacareto (tel 041 528 93 36, San Marco 3447, open Monday to Friday). The search for a good traditional trattoria near San Marco is not easy but you will find it at Al Bacareto. It doubles as an osteria and you can opt for a plateful of cicheti with a glass of wine. Al Covo (tel 041 522 38 12, Campiello della Pescaria 3968, open Friday to Tuesday). Al Covo has quite a name among Venetians and the cuisine is resolutely local. Credit cards are not accepted. Osteria ai Carmini (tel 041 523 11 15, Calle delle Pazienze 2894/a, open 9.30am-11pm, Monday to Saturday). For fresh fish and seafood, this is one of the best spots to seek out around Campo Santa Margherita. Riviera (tel 041 522 76 21, Fondamenta Zattere al Ponte Lungo 1473, open Tuesday to Sunday). Sit by candlelight on the promenade that looks across to Giudecca, and dine on good seafood cooking. Or you can drop by for breakfast. |
