Doge's Palace

The Doge's Palace ( Palazzo Ducale), was oddly enough the residence of the Doge since 814. The Palace is designed in Gothic style, a style maintained during the pieces added during the 14th and 15th century. The upper part of the façade is decorated with coloured marble in a lozenge pattern. Below this there is an arcade of columns in gothic style. The porta della carta (door of paper) leads into a courtyard where gothic begins to mingle with renaissance. The palace houses the state apartments full of examples of late renaissance and gilded opulent ceilings. Here you can also find the torture chambers and place of execution. Even the renaissance had its dark side!
