Caffe Florian (tel 041 520 56 41, Piazza San Marco 56/59). This is the most famous of the three cafes in Piazza San Marco, it has been frequented by the likes of Lord Byron and Henry James. Enjoying the pleasure of this café is a costly experience but one of those things one does only once in life. This bar has been doing business since 1720. Caffe Quadri (tel 041 522 21 05, Piazza San Marco 120, restaurant open Wednesday to Sunday). Quadri is on a par with the Florian, and even opened before the before known Florian as it dates back to 1683. Lavena (tel 041 522 40 70, Piazza San Marco 133, open daily April to September, and Wednesday to Monday, October to March). Founded in 1750 and less renowned, Lavena boasts Wagner as among its clientele but was more a haunt of gondoliers and codega. |
