Follow the Palace around the open sea side and you will come to a bridge that permits views of the famous bridge of sighs. It got its name from the sighs expired by prisoners as they crossed from the palace to the chamber of execution where they too expired. Accademia The Gallerie dell'Accademia houses Venice's single most important art collection, consisting of more than 800 works demonstrating Venetian art from the 14th to 18th centuries. Among the outstanding works are Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of Mary and Carpaccio's Crucifixion, Apotheosis and Miracle of the True Cross, works by Giovanni Bellini, including his "Madonna with Child Between Saints Catherine and Mary Magdalen", and Giorgione's The Storm. Works by Titian, including "Presentation of the Virgin" are accompagnief by Paolo Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi, and Tintoretto's Theft of St Mark's Body and Crucifixion. This museum provides and excellent review of the achievement of the Venetian schools. Ca' d'Oro After you have sailed along the Grand Canal and become curious about what it is like inside one of these wonderful palazzi, you should head for the Ca' d'Oro (Golden House). This magnificent 15th-century Venetian Gothic building was named for the gilding that originally decorated the façade. The Ca' d'Oro is home to the Galleria Franchetti that houses an impressive collection of bronzes, tapestries and paintings and what is left of the frescoes by Titan from outside of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. |
